<Vallican as the centre of the universe -- Living the 100-Mile Life>

The Rural Alternatives Research and Training Society (RARTS) is saying:
“100-Mile Diet? Of course, fabulous idea, let's do it, and while we're at
it, why not the 100-Mile Life?”

On Saturday, August 18, RARTS is hosting a 100-Mile Potluck and 100-Mile
Market at the Vallican Whole Community Centre in the Little Slocan Valley.
In the evening, FLIKS is showing the award-winning NFB film, “The Fight
for True Farming.” Organizers are describing the event as "a celebration
of local abundance and sustainability."

Admission is by donation, although there will be a small vending fee.

The market goes from 10am to 4pm, and features anything created within a
100-mile radius of Vallican, as well as an array of fresh produce and
other food products. If you make saleable goods, come to the market and
let everyone see just how self-sufficient we can be here!

If the materials that go into your products and crafts aren't sourced
locally, you can still sell them. “We're not going to be purist about
this,” says market organizer Moe Lyons. “What we'd like, though, is for
vendors to make one or more items from local materials, and/or put
together a page of information indicating just what would make it possible
for you to make your products from materials closer to home.” Non-profit
organizations can display their information and vend their fund-raising
items for free.

The Vallican Whole has had many wonderful potlucks over the years, and
this one, which starts at 5:30, promises to be one of the best. “We can't
wait to see how many innovative ways people find to prepare zucchini,”
says organizer Rita Moir. “We're also hoping that some people will try to
see just how complex a mix of ingredients they can find within 100 miles
of here.”

“This one's easy,” says Moe. “Just wait -- we're planning to have another
100-Mile Potluck In the winter so start thinking about that one right
now!”

The film, scheduled for 7pm, has been a huge success for the filmmaker,
Eve Lamont, and for the National Film Board. “It is a popular title,” says
NFB Community Marketing Manager, Jane Gutteridge. Apparently the film has
been “flying off the shelf” at the NFB, and RARTS has Tamara Smith to
thank for snagging it for this showing. Lamont also made “Squat,” a
wonderfully controversial film that received great critical acclaim.

This day-long (and life-long) celebration is being held in conjunction
with the Eat Local campaign sponsored by Community Food Matters in Nelson
and the surrounding area.

RARTS, of course, drew some of its inspiration for this event from “The
100-Mile Diet,” by Alisa Smith and James MacKinnon. An account of the
event will be added to their blog. Jennie's Gardens will have copies of
the book for sale on site.
